Midtrimester vaginal Mycoplasma genitalium in women with subsequent spontaneous preterm birth

Article Abstract:

Mycoplasma genitalium in a woman's vagina does not appear to increase the risk of premature birth. In a study of 124 women with premature birth, only five tested positive for this bacterium on a PCR test on vaginal fluid.

Interconceptional antibiotics to prevent spontaneous preterm birth: A randomized clinical trial

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to estimate if antibiotic administration during the interpregnancy interval in nonpregnant women with a previous preterm birth before 34 weeks' gestational age would reduce the rate of spontaneous preterm birth in the subsequent pregnancy. The result showed that intermittent treatment with metronidazole plus azithromycin of nonpregnant women with a recent early spontaneous preterm birth does not significantly reduce subsequent preterm birth and may be associated with a lower delivery gestational age and lower birth weight.

The Alabama preterm birth project: Placental histology in recurrent spontaneous and indicated preterm birth

Article Abstract:

The placental histology for clues related to the recurrent nature of previous preterm birth (PTB) is evaluated. The results have shown that spontaneous PTB (SPTB) and indicated PTB (IPTB) are strongly repetitive and women with SPTB are more likely to have acute inflammation in the free membranes, while women with an IPTB are more likely to have chronic inflammation.
