AIDS among children - United States, 1996

Article Abstract:

As of September 30, 1996, there were 7,472 US children under the age of 13 with AIDS. Ninety percent had acquired the disease during birth from their mother and 80% developed AIDS before the age of 5. Almost 60% were African-American, 23% were Hispanic and 18% were white. New York State, Florida, California, New Jersey and Texas had the most cases, accounting for 66% of all cases. Between 1992 and 1995, the annual number of cases dropped 27%. This probably resulted from guidelines published by the Public Health Service recommending the voluntary testing and treatment of all HIV-positive pregnant women.

AIDS among persons aged 50 years or more - United States, 1991-1996

Article Abstract:

Physicians need to question all patients 50 years or older about risk factors for HIV infection if the patient has the appropriate symptoms. In 1996, 11% of the 68,473 reported AIDS cases occurred in people 50 years or older. The incidence of AIDS-related opportunistic infections in this age group increased 22% between 1991 and 1995, compared to a 9% increase in younger age groups. Many of the older AIDS patients died within one month of the diagnosis, indicating that their diagnosis had been significantly delayed.
