The University of Michigan Medical School, 1850-2000: "An Example Worthy of Imitation"

Article Abstract:

The University of Michigan Medical School has been an innovator for most of its 150-year history. It was built in Ann Arbor, which in the mid-1800s was a small frontier town. It was the first US medical school to create a university-owned hospital and one of the few to admit women and minorities. When it began admitting women in 1870, it was one of only a handful to do so. By the end of the 20th century, the medical school was consistently placed among the top 10 medical centers by associations that rank medical schools.
