The beat goes on

Article Abstract:

Christian Barnard carried out the first modern heart transplant operation in Dec 1967 but the history of organ transplantation goes back much further. History suggests that Chinese surgeon Tsin Yue-Jen exchanged the hearts of two soldiers around 400 BC. Skin grafts and blood transfusion date from the early 19th century, and a surgeon transplanted dog kidneys at the beginning of the 20th century. A Russian surgeon conducted the first human kidney transplant in 1936, and US doctors conducted a successful series of 29 kidney transplants between 1951 and 1976.

Natural born carers

Article Abstract:

A family, which has many members who are nurses, is interviewed to find out what attracted them into the profession. The grandfather was an army nurse in India and the grandmother worked in an asylum. Now their grand-daughter is beginning to train as a nurse also. None of them had career guidance, or saw an advertisement about nursing. They believe pre-nursing courses would be a good way of attracting more applicants, and that the profession needs to raise its profile so that the general public realises what a good career nursing is.

There has been a significant rise in the number of case of diabetes in the UK, and diabetes now accounts for almost 10% of National Health Service spending. There is a clear need for a more systematic approach to the management of diabetes, and this may arrive later in 2001 with the publication of a national service framework for diabetes.
