The building blocks for quality care

Article Abstract:

Federally mandated comprehensive needs assessments for long-term and subacute care patients provide facilities with a sound method for determining and improving the quality of medical care. Needs assessments should begin by collecting all relevant data, followed by a sound data analysis procedure. The analysis process should clearly identify problems and their causes. It must point out all risks and complications that could arise from proposed solutions. Measurable patient goals should be set and a time limit for achieving them established.

Professional shopping of hospital services: an analysis of sub rosa investigative methods in determination of quality

Article Abstract:

Undercover patient investigators may be useful in identifying areas for improvement in quality patient care. A hospital admitted a hired undercover actor for five days to evaluate several quality criteria such as courteousness and professional behavior among the staff, food quality, and comfort factors. The investigator identified several interdepartmental areas for improvement. This relatively short hospital stay produced 69 distinct commentaries on quality patient care.

Critical care admissions criteria in community based hospitals: a pilot study with implications for quality management

Article Abstract:

This article examines data from a pilot study on procedures and guidelines for admission into a critical care unit in a community based hospital.
