The causes of neonatal hypoglycemia

Article Abstract:

There are many different causes of hypoglycemia in newborn infants. Hypoglycemia is low blood sugar. Most normal infants have hypoglycemia when they are first born because the enzymes that break down other foods into sugar are not present until 12 hours of age. Hypoglycemia that lasts beyond that age may be caused by genetic defects or metabolic abnormalities. Infants of diabetic mothers may have hypoglycemia at birth due to excessive insulin levels. There are at least six genetic causes of excessive insulin levels.

The Groningen Protocol - Euthanasia in severely ill newborns

Article Abstract:

Accepting deliberate life-ending procedures for newborns and infants who have serious disorders or deformities associated with suffering that cannot be alleviated and for whom there is no hope of improvement is a matter of concern. Hence, a protocol is developed, known as the Groningen protocol, to provide all the information needed for assessment and to prevent interrogations by police officers in cases in which a decision is made to actively end the life of a newborn.

Endemic Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in a neonatal intensive care unit

Article Abstract:

Staff members in a neonatal intensive care unit may be responsible for transmitting Pseudomonas aeruginosa to newborn babies. In one neonatal ICU, 49 babies became infected over a 20-month period, and in 17, the strain of bacteria was identical to one found on a health care worker.
