The dental care of U.S. children

Article Abstract:

Data from the 2003 Medical Expenditure Panel survey was analyzed to study the role of non-dentist practitioners in referring child patients for dental care. The percentage of civilian noninstitutionalized population of the US aged 2 to 17 years who had a dental visit, who had a dental check up and who received advice from a non-dentist health care provider to have a dental check up was estimated. Findings indicate that children with varying levels of income had no significant differences in terms of having been advised by by a non-dentist health care provider to have a dental checkup.

Access to dental care

Article Abstract:

The need to understand the barriers to care affecting underserved populations is discussed and a framework for designing access-to-care programs is presented. It is suggested that a complete understanding of the barriers to care must be achieved and an improvement plan must be designed to address those specific barriers considering the demand for care, the dental work force and the economic development.
