The emergence of Neisseria gonorrhoeae with decreased susceptibility to ciprofloxacin in Cleveland, Ohio: epidemiology and risk factors

Article Abstract:

The prevalence of Neisseria (N.) gonorrhoeae strains that are resistant to treatment with ciprofloxacin appears to be increasing. Researchers compared the characteristics of 51 male patients with ciprofloxacin-resistant N. gonorrhoeae (study group) to 106 male patients with N. gonorrhoeae treatable with ciprofloxacin (control group). More of the study group patients than control group patients received treatment for an inflamed urethra. Laboratory tests showed that the bacteria found in the study group patients was less likely to have thin membrane walls. Genetic tests suggested that the bacteria was all the same type.

Antibiotic-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae: the calm before another storm?

Article Abstract:

Fluoroquinolones continue to be an effective treatment for Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections when given in the appropriate amount even though rare strains resistant to this treatment appear to be cropping up worldwide. Cefixime or ceftriaxone may be a better first treatment choice. Fluoroquinolone-resistant strains are particularly widespread in Pacific rim countries and therefore fluoroquinolone treatment may not be appropriate for infected patients traveling from these countries. Isolated communities have reported an increase in resistant strains from 2% to 16% in three years.

Evaluation of office-based intervention to improve prevention counseling for patients at risk for sexually acquired hepatitis B virus infection

Article Abstract:

Giving doctors patient notification letters, patient education brochures and counseling guides can increase the number of people who are tested for hepatitis B. In a study of 457 people, such a program more than tripled the number who were tested for hepatitis B.
