The lessons of Lyme Bay

Article Abstract:

Managers should acknowledge that the issue of employee notification of safety complaints is of major significance, as three years' liberty and 85% of a company's assets could be at stake. Employers could be in breach of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regs (MHSWR) if competent safety action is not taken on a safety complaint. Employers should alert employees to their notification duty and should provide training on issues to look out for and the correct notification procedure.

It'll be alright on the night (won't it?) (importance of integrating safety management into business management)

Article Abstract:

Many companies still give safety management issues a very low priority when undertaking risk assessments. Extensive investment can be wasted if the health and safety risks are assessed after other business changes are introduced, and a lot of time and effort can be wasted too. Another danger is that safety may be compromised. It is far better to see safety management as an integral part of business management.

The lessons of Lyme Bay

Article Abstract:

The Lyme Bay canoeing tragedy led to a successful manslaughter prosecution, and outdoor activity centres must consider how to improve self regulation of health and safety. The case has raised significant issues for all those involved in health and safety (HSW) law, including enforcement authorities, employers, directors, managers and employees.
