The man with stars inside

Article Abstract:

Other underlying but resolvable issues seem to have clouded the debate over doctor-assisted suicide. Poor communication between doctor, patient, and family about treatment options, the appropriateness of treatment, and pain management has unfortunately shifted the discussion to death as a preferable option. Improvements in communication and more equitable, compassionate, and respectful medical care for the population's most vulnerable may lead to more beneficial medical care rather than dividing the community over an ethical debate.

Support for national health insurance among doctors

Article Abstract:

Many doctors would support a national health insurance system, according to a survey of 1,650 doctors. Overall, half of the doctors said they supported national health insurance. However, only 26% believed the federal government should be the sole payer. Internists, pediatricians, and psychiatrists were most likely to support national health insurance and family doctors, surgeons, and anesthesiologists were least likely.

Keeping faith: ethics and the physician-writer

Article Abstract:

The ethical issues doctors must consider when writing stories about their patients for publication are discussed. Topics include patient confidentiality and consent, consequences, relational ethics, fact versus fiction, professionalist assumption, and transparency in disclosure. Doctors who also want to be professional writers have an obligation to their patients and to their readers.
