Setting the TONE for ending the hypertension epidemic

Article Abstract:

There is extensive scientific evidence that high blood pressure can be prevented by dietary and lifestyle changes. The 1998 Trial of Nonpharmacologic Interventions in the Elderly (TONE) study found that reducing sodium intake and weight loss were effective in lowering blood pressure in elderly people with existing hypertension. Regular exercise and a diet low in fat and high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes can not only lower the risk of hypertension but the risk of cardiovascular disease as well.

The Hypertension Detection and Follow-Up Program: 17 years on

Article Abstract:

The Hypertension Detection and Follow-Up Program is probably responsible for the aggressive treatment of hypertension in the US. This study, which was done in the 1970s, showed that intensive management of hypertension with antihypertensive drugs reduced mortality rates from cardiovascular disease. However, certain groups of people do not benefit as much as others. Those with mild hypertension and no risk factors for cardiovascular disease probably will not benefit greatly and probably should not be treated.
