The modest giant of medicine

Article Abstract:

The official eradication of smallpox announced by the World Health Organisation in 1980 stemmed from a discovery made by an English country doctor, Edward Jenner, in 1796. An old wives' tale that milkmaids infected with cowpox seemed to become immune to smallpox set Jenner wondering about the protective nature of cowpox. On May 14, 1796, Jenner introduced liquid from the blisters of a young girl with cowpox into cuts on the arms of an eight-year-old boy. The boy developed cowpox but did not develop smallpox when he was subsequently variolated. This was the beginning of vaccination.

Colony to community

Article Abstract:

Caring for victims of leprosy has been the focus of the Bethany Colony in India, where up to 350 people live. The community is made up of people who have suffered from leprosy but are now cured, mainly with the help of Western medical technology. The introduction of multidrug therapy has helped sufferers overcome the illness in as little as six months. Up to 500,000 people are affected by leprosy each year, mainly in Indonesia and India, although up to 300 people in the UK are known to be affected.

Roadside sanctuary. (nursing overseas)

Article Abstract:

A surgeon describes his visit with a medical team to a clinic in central Thailand. The clinic is just a small shelter where the medical team attends to patients with leprosy. The clinic also holds educational sessions to help dispel fears about leprosy. Small medical teams have been visiting such clinics for 30 years, and the incidence of leprosy has fallen dramatically.
