Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome-- Colorado and New Mexico, 1998

Article Abstract:

Three cases are described of two men and one woman who developed hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) between April 15-28, 1998 in Colorado and New Mexico. Both men died from this disease, which is transmitted via exposure to rodents and their droppings, particularly the deer mouse. Rodent populations increased 10- to 20-fold in Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado between March, 1997 and March, 1998. The CDC has received reports of 183 confirmed cases of HPS from 29 states. The most common early symptoms of HPS are fever, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. The risk of HPS can be reduced by limiting exposure to rodents and their droppings.

Trauma systems at risk

Article Abstract:

Efforts to create a national trauma system could founder unless the US creates a public policy to deal with violence. The American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma has created standards for trauma hospitals and 169 hospitals have been accredited. The Los Angeles County-University of Southern California Medical Center has restructured its system to reduce mortality rates and costs. However, the US still has no national policy for preventing injuries from automobile accidents and guns. Congress even eliminated funding for the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control in the 1997 budget.
