The nurse's role in the care of people with MS

Article Abstract:

Nurses have an important role to play in the care of people with multiple sclerosis (MS). MS sufferers have a wide range of symptoms and a wide range of health needs, and these will vary at different times. Nurses need to work closely with MS patients devising their individual care plans, reassessing needs after every progression, and referring needs to other health care workers where appropriate. Symptoms of MS, which is a neurological disorder, include pain, spasticity, visual problems and bladder problems. Prognoses vary, and there is no overall cure, but therapies relieve some problems.

An exercise in hope

Article Abstract:

Multiple sclerosis (MS) sufferers are given minimal advice on areas of daily life such as exercising and resting, but patients should aim to maintain their bodies in the best possible condition. Sufferers who rest too much may subsequently suffer from wasted muscles but this can be improved with daily exercise. Patients can become more positive in their approach to their disease through symptom control. An MS care centre run by Susie Cornell advises patients on diet as well as the appropriate exercises.

A case of mind over matter?

Article Abstract:

Attacks of multiple sclerosis (MS) can be minimised through a well-balanced diet and sufficient sleep, although a positive attitude can prove the best approach. Stress avoidance is also crucial. The condition will affect the sufferers' social life, but an active life remains possible. Symptoms of MS include severe headaches and numbness in the arms, legs and face, together with spasms.
