The power of music

Article Abstract:

Music can have a calming influence on patients and staff in operating theatres. Studies have shown that music of low pitch and even tempo has a relaxing effect on patients. Music reduces anxiety and provides a distraction from pain. Guidelines on the appropriate use of music could assist staff in selection. Patient participation in choice enables them to retain some control over their situation. However, pre-operative assessment of each individual is essential as music therapy is not appropriate for all.

The role of music therapy in the care of the newborn

Article Abstract:

Medical staff are often experienced at recognising the physical needs of neonates, but little is known about psychological needs. Music therapy could play a significant role in improving the psychological state of neonates. Unborn children can hear and respond to music from around 24 weeks, and it has now been shown that music can help the neonate to deal with the stress of the acute care unit. Music used must be selected carefully to be as therapeutic as possible for the infant.

Quality and quantity: staffing and skill mix in neonatal care

Article Abstract:

Recent research has looked at the delivery of front-line care in the neonatal service, and has aimed to identify possible improvements in practice and organisation in this area. In many neonatal units, staffing levels and qualification in speciality rates were found to be lower than those recommended. The research concluded that it is necessary to review the needs of all nursing staff to allow them to adjust to the new skills which are now required.
