The quality of health care delivered to adults in the United States

Article Abstract:

Americans are only receiving half of the healthcare services that are recommended by various health agencies, according to researchers who documented the delivery of healthcare services in 12 metropolitan areas. They looked at 439 indicators of quality of care for 30 medical conditions, including preventive services. For example, only 64% of elderly Americans receive the pneumococcal vaccine and only 38% are screened for colorectal cancer.

Who is at greatest risk for receiving poor-quality health care?

Article Abstract:

The quality of health care received by those American adults who had made one visit to a health care provider during the previous two years is assessed and the extent to which the quality of health care varies among sociodemographic groups is estimated. The results have shown that individual characteristics that often have a protective effect do not protect most people from deficits in the quality of care.
