The quiet menace

Article Abstract:

Brain cancer accounts for almost 3,000 deaths per year in the UK, but does not attract the kind of publicity connected with breast cancer. A female patient suffering from brain cancer was diagnosed as having psychiatric problems by her general practitioner and admitted to a psychiatric hospital, where symptoms of her illness, such as loss of speech and fits, were explained as her need for attention. The failure of psychiatrists and GPs to recognize the early symptoms of brain cancer lead to a delay in treatment, and relatives often have to fight to obtain a correct diagnosis

Radical support

Article Abstract:

The most common treatment for facial or neck cancer is surgery, and this can bring particular emotional and practical difficulties for the patient. The nurse therefore plays a key role in giving the patient all the necessary information, both before and after surgery. It is important to maintain a positive and supportive attitude about surgery, and to work in close partnership with the patient. The patient must be encouraged to undertake as many personal caring tasks as possible, thus ensuring that self-esteem is maintained.

Understanding anti-emetics

Article Abstract:

Anti-emetic drugs help relieve the effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy cancer treatment. Combination therapy may be more effective than single agent. Therapy includes the use of substituted benzamides, phenothiazines, butyrophenones, corticosteroids and benzodiazepines. However, side effects such as weight gain or sedation may occur. The development of 5-HT3 receptor antagonists has provided sickness control with few side effects.
