Appropriate nursing home placement of elderly mentally-ill clients requires individual assessment of needs. Choice of home will depend on admission policy and an individual's personal circumstances. Assessment is based on physical and mental health and social and financial circumstances. A primary nurse makes initial contact with the client to establish mutual suitability. A visit to the home by client and family establishes shared responsibility for care planning. Assessment continues after the client has taken residency to ensure care is appropriate.

The right track

Article Abstract:

Older people attending accident and emergency units have special needs which hospitals must consider; however, they are often considered to be a low priority and are seen by junior members of staff. Older patients should be seen in a cubicle which has been adapted for their needs, with a clock and calendar to prevent disorientation, a hearing loop system, an emergency bell, and food and drink. When discharged, transport should be arranged and their doctor told within three days. These measures will improve the hospital experience of elderly patients.

Issues are presented concerning the care of elderly people who are suffering from diseases such as Alzheimer's. The cost of care is frequently met by the patients who sell are forced to sell their homes. The legality of this practice is discussed.
