The risk of a diagnosis of cancer after primary deep venous thrombosis or pulmonary embolism

Article Abstract:

The development of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism without a clear cause may indicate hidden cancer. Researchers in Denmark studied 15,348 patients with deep vein blood clots and 11,305 patients with blood clots in the lungs from 1977 through 1993. The risk of a subsequent diagnosis of cancer was three times the expected risk, based on cancer incidence rates in the general population. One year after the clotting event, the cancer risk had declined to expected rates. Although a hidden cancer may have caused the clotting, extensive testing may not be helpful.

Psychiatric hospitalizations among survivors of cancer in childhood or adolescence

Article Abstract:

Survivors of childhood cancer are no more likely to develop psychiatric problems than other adults, unless they had brain cancer. Adult survivors of childhood brain cancer were more likely than other cancer survivors to develop psychosomatic disorders, schizophrenia, and psychoses associated with a brain abnormality. This shows that the increased risk of psychiatric disorders in brain cancer survivors may have a biological rather than a psychological cause.
