The role of steering groups and project workers in NDUs

Article Abstract:

Applicants setting up a nursing development unit (NDU) in the UK must apply for NDU status from the Department of Health and King's Fund. NDUs are also required to set up steering groups to offer support, review progress and distribute information. Leaders from 28 NDUs assessed the effectiveness of the steering groups and the role of the project workers attached to units. Marketing, monitoring progress and providing a range of skills are considered to be the main functions of the steering groups. A table outlining the positive and negative aspects of steering groups is included.

An overview of NDU practices and values

Article Abstract:

The main objectives of the 29 King's Nursing Development Units (NDUs) which received Department of Health funding in 1992 primarily consisted of maximising the quality of nursing care offered. Main areas of focus included the development of autonomous and creative nurses and the provision of client-centred care which incorporates client empowerment and autonomy. Staff in NDU units face several personal challenges, such as maintaining commitment in an atmosphere of constant observation.
