The variant forms of autoimmune hepatitis

Article Abstract:

The establishment of standard diagnostic criteria for autoimmune hepatitis has helped its diagnosis, but it may serve to exclude patients with varieties that do not fit those criteria. These patients fall into two categories: patients displaying symptoms of autoimmune hepatitis and another disorder and patients deviating from the classic definition. The first includes combinations of autoimmune hepatitis and primary biliary cirrhosis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, and chronic viral hepatitis. The second includes autoimmune cholangitis and cryptogenic chronic hepatitis.

Increased risk for venous thrombosis in carriers of the prothrombin G-A20210 gene variant

Article Abstract:

There is a mutation in the prothrombin gene which has been found to have an association with an increased risk of venous thrombosis or blood clots in the veins. This is especially true in people who have a history of lower limb thrombosis. In studying 281 consecutive patients who had these blood clots, it was found that this particular mutation, G-A20210, was found more often than in the 850 people studied who did not have blood clots. These people also seem to have higher levels of prothrombin, from which the clots are made.

Fatal inflammatory condition in a patient with a variant bacterial strain

Article Abstract:

Some strains of Clostridium difficile do not produce toxin A and may be missed on diagnostic tests. A man died from a Clostridium difficile infection even though his test was repeatedly negative. Of 67 testing labs surveyed, half only tested for toxin A.
