The war on oral cavity and pharyngeal cancer

Article Abstract:

Dentists can play a significant role in educating their patients and the public about mouth cancer prevention. A researcher highlighted current thought on the mechanisms of cancer growth and the role of the dentist in the prevention and identification of mouth cancers. Patients may inherit one copy of a defective gene predisposing them to cancer. A mutation of the second gene copy caused by environmental factors such as sun exposure or long-term tobacco or alcohol abuse may initiate the growth of a cancer. Routine examinations for mouth cancer may help to identify and treat a cancer in the early stages of the disease. Periodic advice about the dangers of tobacco and alcohol abuse may help prevent mouth cancers from developing. Dentists can educate their patients during routine examinations as well as cooperate with regional and national cancer research and prevention organizations in educating the general public.

Biomimetics could allow dentists to use a patient's own bone cells to restore teeth and bones. Biomimetics is the study of biological processes in an effort to mimic them, often using the patient's own cells. The transforming growth factor-beta genes govern the development of bone and dentin in mammals. Bone morphogenic protein controls the regeneration of bone, but it cannot regenerate large areas of bone. For this, dentists still need to use bone transplants.
