The west end

Article Abstract:

The Gloucester authorities succeeded in protecting the children at risk in the West household, although they did not act fast enough in the opinion of the author. The Wests became known to the authorities when they were convicted of a serious sexual assault in 1974. Since then several warning signs were missed by the social, health and education services and the police. Files disappeared from the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, for reasons unknown. A general lack of communication and cooperation between local authorities compounded the situation.

Teetering on the brink

Article Abstract:

UK health secretary, Frank Dobson, gave vague answers to journalists who asked him about plans to charge patients for stays in hospital, however, it is unlikely that the labour government would introduce such a measure because it wants to maintain a free national health service. Dobson hopes that careful planning will avert problems, however, he acknowledges that severe weather conditions or an outbreak of disease could upset his plans. Labour remains committed to providing health care based on need and plans to abolish general practitioner fundholding.

Shakin' Stephen

Article Abstract:

The initial approach of Stephen Dorrell to his new role as secretary of state for health has generally been received positively. He is seen as being sensitive to the needs of health professionals, and seems to appreciate the pressure facing the National Health Service (NHS). However, health professionals are still sceptical about whether the government's health policies will really improve.
