There are ways to make medicines accessible

Article Abstract:

Drugs have been cost-effective forms of treatment for many years, although not accessible due to high prices. Current pharmaceutical prices are reasonable considering the money and risk involved in developing new drugs, and the percentage of gross national product spent on pharmaceuticals has remained at .5% for the past 30 years. However, these arguments mean little to someone who cannot afford his or her medication. Reducing drug company profits is unrealistic, but poor patients must be ensured access to medicines through programs set up by pharmaceutical firms and through public and private insurance companies.

No fleeing of healthy because of community rating

Article Abstract:

Henry Kaiser Family Foundation's Innovations report indicates that the 'pure' community rating laws in New Jersey and New York have not resulted in higher insurance premiums or other problems for individuals and the small-group market. Instead, the number of insurance policies increased by about 30% after a law was passed in New Jersey. The laws help establish a fair market for many more people who want to be covered by insurance.
