Third Millennium Challenge: Hepatitis C

Article Abstract:

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is the most common cause of liver disease requiring transplantation. Hepatitis C may infect four million people in the US, and can lead to cirrhosis, chronic hepatitis, and liver cancer. The infection may persist for many years without symptoms, slowly damaging the liver. Enzyme immunoassay and immunoblot testing are used to diagnose the infection and monitor the effects of drug therapy. Generally, six months of therapy with antiviral drugs and interferon suppress virus levels below detectable limits. Infection with the genotype 1 HCV, most common in the US, may require an additional six months of treatment after successful viral suppression.
