Those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer: high temperatures mixed with sunny days and pollution is a recipe for an unhappy holiday

Article Abstract:

Days out and holidays have many hidden health hazards such as more traffic causing pollution, combined with hot weather, producing poor air quality. Air quality is measured against standards of ozone parts per billion, and high levels of ozone are often product in hot and sunny weather. Ozone levels are usually higher in rural areas, and forecasts can help those with asthma to decide what precautions they need to take. Other hazards include litter and dog fouling on beaches and poor water quality. There is also the problem of sunbathing and the risk of skin cancer.

On the record

Article Abstract:

Many nurses, midwives and health visitors in the UK remain uncertain about the role of their national boards and the services which these boards can supply. The national boards exist mainly to put into operation the UKCC's standards and to ensure that these standards are met. However, they can also offer services such as careers advice and continuing education directly to health visitors, midwives and nurses, and can advise schools, careers officers, employers, colleges and course providers.
