Thrombopoietin levels in patients with cirrhosis before and after orthotopic liver transplantation

Article Abstract:

Inhibited thrombopoietin production may be a factor in the decreased platelet counts seen in many patients with liver cirrhosis. Blood samples from 44 patients with cirrhosis were analyzed for platelet counts and thrombopoietin levels and compared with 17 of these patients after liver transplantation. There was no measurable initial evidence of thrombopoietin in 39 of the 44 patients. Nearly all of the patients undergoing a liver transplant had measurable thrombopoietin levels within three days of surgery. The highest thrombopoietin levels coincided with increased platelet counts.

Methylene blue and cirrhosis: pathophysiologic insights, therapeutic dilemmas

Article Abstract:

An excess of nitric oxide may play a role in some liver diseases. A study published in 2000 showed that methylene blue improved symptoms in patients with liver disease. Methylene blue blocks the activity of nitric oxide.
