Thyroid status, cardiovascular risk, and mortality in older adults

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to determine the relationship between baseline thyroid status and incident atrial fibrillation, incident cardiovascular disease, and mortality in older men and women not taking thyroid medication. An association is shown between subclinical hyperthyroidism and development of artial fibrillation but do not support the hypothesis that unrecognized subclinical hyperthyroidism or subclinical hypothyroidism is associated with other cardiovascular disorders or mortality.

Clinical practice guidelines and quality of care for older patients with multiple comorbid diseases: Implications for pay for performance

Article Abstract:

The aim of the study is to evaluate the applicability of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) to the care of older individuals with several comorbid diseases. The review suggests that adhering the current CPGs in caring for an older person with several comorbidities may have undesirable effects and developing measures of the quality of the care needed by older patients with complex comorbidities is critical to improving their care.
