'Time for teachers': the design and evaluation of a personal development course for teachers

Article Abstract:

A personal development course was set up to improve the self-confidence and job satisfaction of primary teachers. The residential course lasted for five days and participants were encouraged to set the agenda themselves so that their needs could be met. Activities such as canoeing and an overnight hike were included. The teachers found the course useful and the team-building element was especially valuable. The personal benefits were still felt some months after the course finished however most teachers found that they were not able to improve the attitudes of other teachers within their schools.

The European Network of Health Promoting Schools: development and evaluation in Scotland

Article Abstract:

The Health Education Board for Scotland had provided funding for 12 Scottish schools to participate in the European Network of Health Promoting Schools as of Mar 1996. A case study approach has been adopted to evaluate the planning, implementation, development and maintenance of school-based health promotion projects. This has indicated that schools will probably require external assistance if they are to undertake an effective evaluation of their health promotion work.

Article Abstract:

Comparisons of the effects on attitudes and behaviour of healthy eating policies in a case study school and two control schools found that pupils in the case study school, which had a healthy eating policy, selected healthier snacks.
