Time-series analysis of the relation between influenza virus and hospital admissions of the elderly in Ontario, Canada, for pneumonia, chronic lung disease, and congestive heart failure

Article Abstract:

Researchers conducted a study to examine the relationship between the presence of circulating influenza virus and hospital admissions of people aged 65 and up in Ontario, Canada, for such illnesses as pneumonia, congestive heart failure, and chronic lung cancer. Researchers found significant correlations between the influenza virus and hospital admissions for pneumonia and chronic lung disease. However, they found no relations between influenza virus and hospital admission for congestive heart failure.

Lung cancer risk in hard-metal workers

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted in France's hard metal industry to determine the link between lung cancer and occupational exposure to cobalt and tungsten carbide. In this study, 5,777 male and 1,682 female workers were followed between 1968 and 1991. The death rate from lung cancer was significant, with smokers at a higher risk. The study supports the hypothesis that workers exposed to cobalt and tungsten carbide risk lung cancer.

Asymptomatic incidence and duration of prostate cancer

Article Abstract:

Prostate-specific antigen screening may provide a reliable method of early prostate cancer detection. Since many incidents are age-specific asymptomatic cases with about 75% going undetected, effective screening procedures are needed. The estimated mean duration of the disease is between 10 and 11 years for African Americans and 11 and 12 years for Caucasians.
