Tired and tested

Article Abstract:

While midwifery teams aim to provide mothers and babies with continuity of care, it is suggested that the concept has a number of complex problems associated with it. A motion tabled at the Royal College of Midwives' annual general meeting suggests that many midwives are failing to receive guaranteed overtime pay or extra holiday in recognition of their commitment. Team midwifery must be seen to be working in the best interests of both mothers and health care providers.

12% rise 'will not stem staff exodus'

Article Abstract:

The non-staged pay rises of up to 12% for nurses and midwives will not prevent their exodus from the NHS, according to RCN general secretary Christine Hancock. The Pay Review Body also recommended a 4.7% rise for most nurses, but Ms Hancock warned that the 4.7% for the majority will not encourage nurses to stay in the NHS. RCM general secretary Karlene Davis was disappointed that there were no defined recommendations to award midwives a minimum annual salary.

Changing for the better?: hailed as a major advance for midwifery, Changing Childbirth is now being used to cut costs by down-grading midwives

Article Abstract:

Midwives are moving close to providing woman-centred care although the recommendations of Changing Childbirth seem at odds with the advent of the purchaser/ provider split or NHS trust status. It seems that the report has also become a tool to reduce the wage bill and the RCM is seeking evidence from the government that woman-centred care is not being used as a tool to downgrade midwives.
