Article Abstract:

A specialist paediatric community nursing unit is to be established by the UK government, commemorating the works of Diana, Princess of Wales, although funding for the unit has yet to be agreed. The 30 million pounds sterling-per-year nursing unit will work with children with terminal and serious illness. The government has promised to contribute 2 million pounds sterling towards the establishment of 10 trial schemes by April 1999. The nursing units have been labeled 'Diana's angels' by the UK press, which has upset some within the service.

Vital links in the chain

Article Abstract:

Patients benefit immensely from the service provided by district nurses, according to a report by the UK Audit Commission. The district nurse service costs 650 million pounds sterling per year to run, providing health care services for up to 2.75 million people nationally. The report highlighted a lack of caseload assessment, which produced inefficient working and inadequate referral follow ups. Clinical supervision fell below requirement with under 50% of nurses surveyed having been checked in the 12 months prior to the survey.

The price is not right

Article Abstract:

Nursing can incur a lot of expenses. Some nurses returning to work are being charged for training courses, despite the government allocating funds for conversion courses. Some nurses in the mental health sector would have lost pension entitlements whilst working part-time had not changes been made to the system. Nurses who wash their own uniforms are only allowed to claim against tax if a laundry service is not operated by their employers. Nurses who live in London are finding housing costs expensive.
