Total breakdown(drugs and pornography at Ashworth Hospital, UK)

Article Abstract:

Patients in the Personality Disorder Unit at Ashworth Hospital, England, UK, have been found to be in possession of drugs and pornography. The unit can accommodate 115 patients and offers a therapeutic approach to care. The unit holds very dangerous patients and the union steward blames agency staff who are unfamiliar with security measures and are not trained to deal with these types of disturbed patients. Two nurses have been suspended pending further investigations and managers are being criticised for not responding to complaints.

Community scare

Article Abstract:

The UK government has denied rumours that it is planning to abandon community care for the mentally ill. However, Health Secretary Frank Dobson has indicated that it would be better to care for some mentally ill people in 24-hour secure units, rather than in the community. Health Minister Paul Boateng is to look in detail at this issue, but no policy announcement will be made until spring 1998. Mental health campaigners believe that the government should give particular attention to core community care support.

From carers to custodians

Article Abstract:

Many community psychiatric nurses in the UK are facing serious ethical and moral concerns about their role as a result of the Mental Health (Patients in the Community) Act 1995. Under this legislation, community psychiatric nurses are allocated the role of 'supervisor' of discharged patients. Some nurses feel that this role will be in direct conflict with their ability to provide therapeutic care. There are now many sanctions for nurses to impose, and this can create sensitive situations.
