Transdermal nicotine replacement in pregnancy: maternal pharmacokinetics and fetal effects

Article Abstract:

Nicotine skin patches may not produce negative effects in pregnant women who want an alternative to smoking and their fetuses. Researchers placed nicotine skin patches on six pregnant women who could not quit smoking otherwise. Nicotine levels in saliva increased with patch use, while cotinine levels in saliva stayed low during the eight hours that the patch was worn. Neither fetal nor maternal health appeared to be compromised with use of nicotine patches. Since this study was small, nicotine skin patches during pregnancy should still be considered a Pregnancy Category D medication.

Polymorphisms in folate metabolizing genes and risk for spontaneous preterm and small-for-gestational age birth

Article Abstract:

The relationship of 5 nonsynonymous substitutions is examined in 4 folate metabolizing genes, including 5,10-methylenetetrahyrofolate reductase (MTHFR), methionine synthase (MTR), methionine synthase reductase (MTRR) and cytosolic serine hydroxymethyl-transferase (SHMT1), and their interaction with folate intake and risk of spontaneous preterm or small-for-gestational age (SGA) birth in a nested case-control study. The results have suggested the possibility of a direct or indirect role for the SHMT1 (1420)T variant in spontaneous preterm or SGA births.
