Transformed by thyroxine

Article Abstract:

The endocrine disorder myxoedema can take some time to diagnose since the symptoms of the disease are similar to the features of ageing, but once recognised, treatment with thyroxine can produce a dramatic improvement. Thinning hair, a bloated appearance and heightened sensitivity to cold are amongst the symptoms. Some old people dismissed as being eccentric or senile have actually been suffering from myxoedema and have enjoyed a greatly improved lifestyle once the disease was diagnosed and treatment given.
