Transvaginal reduction of an interstitial heterotopic pregnancy with preservation of the intrauterine gestation

Article Abstract:

A seven-week misimplanted embryo was terminated via a vaginal procedure without affecting another viable embryo. Two embryos survived in a woman undergoing in vitro fertilization. However, one of them implanted in a location that would have led to rupture. The pregnancy was terminated by introducing a needle under ultrasound guidance and injecting potassium chloride and methotrexate into the embryonic heart. Fluid from this embryo was suctioned out to minimize risk to the viable embryo. The embryo was resorbed, the viable embryo was unharmed, and a healthy infant was born at full term.

Ischemic optic neuropathy after hemorrhage from a cornual ectopic gestation

Article Abstract:

Doctors report vision loss in a young woman following surgery for ruptured ectopic pregnancy. At eight weeks gestation, the patient developed intense abdominal pain and was diagnosed with pregnancy outside the uterus. At surgery, she had lost 3,000 milliliters of blood into the abdomen and received a substantial amount of physiologic saline to restore her blood volume. In four days, she developed swelling, headache, and vision loss. Vision loss is a rare complication of severe bleeding. Dilution of plasma proteins may cause swelling and diminished blood flow to the optic nerve.

Article Abstract:

Women with a history of ectopic pregnancy or surgery on the Fallopian tubes should be carefully monitored during pregnancy to detect a cornual heterotopic pregnancy. This occurs when there are two or more simultaneous implantation sites.
