Treatment of hair loss

Article Abstract:

There are two effective drugs for treating hair loss. Finasteride inhibits the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone. Excessive levels of dihydrotestosterone in the scalp are believed to be responsible for male-pattern baldness. Finasteride can lower the excessive levels of dihydrotestosterone without affecting testosterone production. Minoxidil can also promote hair growth. Minoxidil is the only treatment for women with baldness. Patients with an autoimmune disease called alopecia areata can also benefit from minoxidil, as well as corticosteroids, anthralin, and topical immunotherapy.

The treatment of croup with glucocorticoids

Article Abstract:

Children with croup should receive an intramuscular shot of dexamethasone. This corticosteroid has been shown to be effective in the treatment of croup, which is an inflammation in the throat that can affect breathing. A 1998 study found that both dexamethasone and another corticosteroid, budesonide, were effective in treating croup. In the US, dexamethasone is more readily available and cost-effective. Other treatments for croup include humidified air, supplemental oxyggen and epinephrine.
