Tuberculosis research: balancing the portfolio

Article Abstract:

Much research is needed to find the most effective ways of coping with tuberculosis (TB) in developing countries. TB in 1996 accounted for 26% of preventable deaths in developing countries. It has emerged as a common opportunistic infection in HIV-infected patients. In these patients, however, it is harder to diagnose and treat. Some researchers believe effective methods to diagnose and treat TB already exist while others disagree. A 1996 article reviews the progress needed to adequately address the TB problem in developing countries.

Tuberculosis Treatment Interruptions--Ivanovo Oblast, Russian Federation, 1999

Article Abstract:

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has discovered that the reason directly observed therapy did not control tuberculosis in the Ivanovo oblast of the Russian Federation was because many of the patients interrupted their treatment for 2 to 8 weeks and sometimes longer. Directly observed therapy means that a health care worker delivers the medication and makes sure the patient takes it.
