Types of bone-marrow and stem-cell transplant

Article Abstract:

Stem cells for transplantation can be obtained as an autologous transplant from the patient's own bone marrow or peripheral blood, or they can be obtained from a donor in an allogeneic transplant. Cord-blood stem-cell transplantation (CBSCT) is a new type of allogeneic transplant. Two CBSCTs have been carried out in the UK. The donors in both cases were the patients' new-born siblings, but cord blood banks are now being established. The advantages and disadvantages of autologous transplants, identically matched allogeneic transplants and CBSCTs are presented.

Blood cells: Part five--Platelets

Article Abstract:

Platelets are the smallest formed elements of the blood and are essential for the normal blood clotting process with a lifespan of about nine to ten days. Platelets play a significant role in the immune system, particularly in relation to inflammation and are involved in the development of atheromatous plaques in vessels and even in metastasis of malignant tumors.
