Advances in the Use of Computed Tomography

Article Abstract:

The development of helical computed tomography (CT) scanning has revolutionized the use of CT scans. During helical CT scanning, the frame that contains the rotating X-ray tube moves in a continuous spiral. Helical CT scanning has been used to detect pulmonary embolism, kidney stones, appendicitis, bowel obstruction, renal artery stenosis and renovascular hypertension. It can be used to create three-dimensional images, which can enhance the diagnosis of lung diseases, colorectal diseases, and coronary artery disease. Helical CT scanning is easier on the patient and may cost less than other diagnostic procedures. It is available at most hospitals and large outpatient clinics.
