Umbilical cord blood for bone marrow transplantation

Article Abstract:

Umbilical cord blood from unrelated newborns may replace bone marrow in malignant childhood diseases, such as leukemia. Blood cells collected from the clamped umbilical cord are readily available, may proliferate better, and carry less risk of rejection by the host immune system. Possible disadvantages include the unknown long-term viability of such cells and the uncertainty about insufficient cell quantities needed. Bone marrow cells recovered within weeks after transplantation of umbilical blood cells in children with leukemia and other serious conditions.

Cord blood banks

Article Abstract:

A list of public cord blood banks in the US is presented. Cord blood is taken from a newborn baby's umbilical cord and is used as a source of stem cells for a stem cell transplant. There are some private banks, but they charge fees for collecting and storing the blood.
