Understanding compound drugs

Article Abstract:

The use of the prefix 'co' to denote compound drugs is increasing in prescriptions. The prefix shows that the drug contains a combination of medication, with the rest of the name showing its components, for example the diuretic drug co-amiolfruse contains frusemide and amiloride. However, these new names still lead to confusion sometimes. The introduction of generic drug names was initially intended to cut costs, rather than make medication dispensing easier for nurses.

Role development

Article Abstract:

Practice nurses should be allowed to gain qualifications for prescribing drugs to enhance nursing care. The UK Department of Health advisory group's report has recommended Health Visitor and District Nurse prescribing. However, prescribing is also relevant for practice nurses although patients' needs rather than professional rivalry should motivate nurses.
