Unequal treatment

Article Abstract:

Ethnic minorities are experiencing wide-spread racial discrimination from patients, management and colleagues within the NHS. On average it takes five more years for black and Asian nursing and midwifery staff in grades C and D to reach grades F and G in comparison to white staff. Unison's deputy head of health, Malcolm Wing, says that the equal opportunities policy is not put into practice. Management seminars are being given to focus on this problem area, with the aim of improving ethnic minority employment issues.

Shifting focus

Article Abstract:

The National Health Service (NHS) will undergo a period of consolidation as the internal market develops, according to junior health minister Gerald Malone, speaking at the annual conference of the National Association of Health Authorities and Trusts (NAHAT). There will be a move from an acute to a primary care-led health service, with decision-making coming closer to patients. Against this background, staff motivation is of prime importance.

Nursing concerns made redundant

Article Abstract:

The Edinburgh Sick Children's NHS Trust has made its full-time nursing adviser, Winnie Miller, redundant because it claims it no longer needs a full-time director of nursing. Staff and unions at the Scottish hospital are shocked at Ms Miller's dismissal and say that the post should be reinstated immediately. The trust's chief executive, Malcolm Wright, admits that the post is being converted into a part-time appointment to reduce costs.
