Article Abstract:

US health care management consultant Marie Manthey explains the strategies which she believes hospital ward leaders can adopt to ensure that standards of patient care are maintained and that the principles of the nursing profession are recognized and valued. She maintains that nurses must not passively accept changes in their profession due to strategic changes in health care. They should work together and make their own strategic plans to ensure that they maintain control of the nursing role. People in leadership roles should also ensure they delegate tasks as appropriate.

Mind games

Article Abstract:

Nurses who are involved in management tasks attended a two-day training course to learn skills to help them work more effectively by organising their ideas and improving their communication skills. The trainer used unusual activities, such as juggling, to show how the mind can be focused on more than one idea at a time. Other activities included mind mapping, body language, speed reading and problem solving. The nurses enjoyed the course but had mixed feelings about its application in the workplace.
