Update: AIDS among women - United States, 1994

Article Abstract:

The proportion of AIDS among women has been rising since 1985, and is primarily associated with injected drug use or sex with an infected man. In 1994, women accounted for 18% of AIDS cases reported in persons older than 13 years. Most cases in women (84%) occurred in those between 15 and 44 years old, and 77% of cases were found in African-American and Hispanic women. The Northeast and South had the highest percentages of AIDS cases in women. Researchers estimate that 7,000 women with HIV infection gave birth in 1993, resulting in an estimated 1,000 to 2,000 infected infants. Public health officials may recommend HIV testing and counseling for pregnant women, because zidovudine treatment of infected women during pregnancy appears to reduce the risk of transmission to infants. Other preventive efforts should focus on reduction of risk behaviors, drug abuse treatment, consistent use of condoms during sex, and development of new protective drugs and devices for women.

Global Perspective From International AIDS Society President Mark Wainberg

Article Abstract:

The president of the International AIDS Society believes prevention is the key to fighting the AIDS epidemic. Mark Wainberg believes in continued research on vaccines, enhanced educational programs, more widespread distribution of condoms and antiviral drugs that can be placed in the vagina. Developing countries in particular need to focus on prevention, since many cannot afford expensive AIDS drugs.
