Update: acquired immunodeficiency syndrome - United States, 1994

Article Abstract:

The revised definition of AIDS caused an increase in reported cases in 1993, as expected, but the number of reported cases in 1994 declined in comparison. The definition of AIDS was expanded at the beginning of 1993 to include severe HIV infection and HIV infection plus tuberculosis, recurrent pneumonia, or cervical cancer. Fifty-four percent of AIDS cases reported in 1994 met the criteria based on the revised definition. The 1994 data also show that women and minorities accounted for a higher proportion of cases whereas gay or bisexual men accounted for a lower proportion. AIDS cases among children increased 8% in 1994 compared with 1993. Analysis of trends in AIDS statistics should be based on year of diagnosis rather than year of report to avoid any confusion due to implementation of the revised reporting criteria.

Annual and New Year's Day alcohol-related traffic fatalities -- United States, 1982-1990

Article Abstract:

A review of data on alcohol-related traffic fatalities from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows the percentage of traffic fatalities involving alcohol decreased from 57.3% in 1982 to 49.6% in 1990, a decrease of approximately 2% a year. The percentage of fatalities involving alcohol recorded on January 1 -- the day New Year's Eve fatalities are recorded -- decreased from 83.5% in 1982 to 62% in 1990, an average annual decrease of 4%.

Mycobacterium haemophilum infections -- New York City Metropolitan Area, 1990-1991

Article Abstract:

A review of reports from hospital microbiology laboratories and infectious disease specialists in New York City found 13 cases of Mycobacterium haemophilum infections. Eleven were AIDS patients and two had received a bone marrow transplant.
