Update: influenza activity - United States and worldwide, 1997-98 season, and composition of the 1998-99 influenza vaccine

Article Abstract:

The 1997-98 influenza season was dominated by the influenza A (H3N2) virus for the second consecutive year. Outbreaks of influenza B virus were reported in Japan and the People's Republic of China but worldwide, most isolates were influenza A virus. Two related viruses circulated during this time: A/Wuhan/359/95 and A/Sydney/5/97. The influenza season began in early December and peaked in early February. In May, the first case of influenza A (H5N1) occurred in Hong Kong, and was followed by 17 additional cases in November and December. The 1998-99 vaccine will contain A/Sydney/5/97 (H3N2), A/Beijing/262/95 (H1N1) and B/Beijing/184/93 viruses.

Update: influenza activity - United States and worldwide, 1996-97 season, and composition of the 1997-98 influenza vaccine

Article Abstract:

Influenza activity during the 1996-97 season in the US began in October, peaked in late December/early January and lasted until the end of March. A similar pattern was seen worldwide. In the US, 81% of the influenza viruses isolated were type A and all were type A(H3N2). However, after February, the proportion of influenza type B infections increased. Worldwide, influenza type A(H3N2) predominated in North America and Europe, but in Asian countries, type B predominated. The 1997-98 vaccine will cover type A(H3N2), A(H1N1) and B.

Update: Influenza Activity--United States and Worldwide, 1999-2000 Season, and Composition of the 2000-2001 Influenza Vaccine

Article Abstract:

The number of deaths from pneumonia and influenza during the 1999-2000 influenza season was greater than the previous four seasons. Influenza A (H3N2) viruses predominated worldwide, and this was the third consecutive season that these viruses predominated in the US. The 1999-2000 influenza vaccine should be effective against these viral strains.
