Updated UKCC code of conduct meets a mixed reception

Article Abstract:

The first revision to the UKCC's Code of Professional Conduct since 1984 has received a mixed reception, with suggestions that the old clauses on 'whistle-blowing' have been weakened by the changes made to the wording of the code. While the new code has been welcomed by the RCN, and the RCM feels that it provides greater scope for accountability, COHSE has expressed concern over the new wording. New guidelines on a replacement for the extended role certificate system are provided by a position statement, 'The Scope of Professional Practice,' launched alongside the new code.

The big issue: One in five of us is now obese. This not only affects individual health, but increases costs to the NHS

Article Abstract:

The physical activity involved in daily life 50 years ago was the equivalent if running a marathon each week. More calories were required to fuel the physical activity, but fat intake was around 20% of the diet, compared to around 40% today. The number of obese people in the UK doubled in the 1980s and obesity is a serious health risk. Obesity is the focus of public health initiatives, but obese patients often have unrealistic expectations about weight loss.

Moores' code

Article Abstract:

England Chief Nursing Officer, Yvonne Moores has profoundly influenced nursing since her appointment in 1992. She has reviewed all nursing disciplines. She has achieved greater nursing representation in the UK Department of Health (DoH). She considers a new nursing strategy vital with the change in emphasis from secondary to primary care. However, her support for the DoH's value for money strategy and skill-mixing has caused controversy.
