Upper airway sleep-disordered breathing in women

Article Abstract:

Women with upper airway sleep-disordered breathing may have different physical characteristics from the conventional profile of persons, especially men, with sleep-disordered breathing. A study of 334 women aged 18 years and older diagnosed with upper airway sleep-disordered breathing found that 45% had abnormal facial and head bone structures, such as small neck circumference, narrow, high hard palate of the mouth, and overbite. Forty-three percent of premenopausal women reported painful or absent menstruation, which ceased after treatment with nasal continuous positive airway pressure. Divorce and social isolation as a result of sleep-disordered breathing were higher among women than men. More women may experience this problem than has been previously thought.

Estrogen must be continued to maintain benefits

Article Abstract:

Bone mineral density similar to pre-menopausal women can be achieved by females past the age of 60 with estrogen therapy. Current users of estrogen have significantly higher levels of bone mineral density, compared to those who never have used estrogen, and current late users see beneficial effects as well. However, there is little agreement within the medical profession as to the optimal times to begin or end estrogen therapy.

Healthiness, fatigue, and symptom experience in women with and without breast cancer

Article Abstract:

Women treated for breast cancer do not seem to perceive themselves as less healthy than women without breast cancer. Fifty-three women with breast cancer and 89 healthy female volunteers completed questionnaires on fatigue, healthiness, and symptom perceptions. Symptom scores were higher among women undergoing cancer treatment. However, all other comparisons were similar between the two groups.
