Urinary iodine excretion in mothers and their breast-fed children in relation to other childhood nutritional parameters

Article Abstract:

Iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) have been identified as a critical health concern in many countries in Central and West Africa. However, policymaking on the control of IDD is so poorly planned in the region that the screening methods used are quite often unreliable. To shed light on the problems encountered in controlling IDD in Africa, a randomized, cross-sectional study of breast-feeding mothers and their children was conducted. Results showed that infants could still develop IDD even if they are breastfed by iodine-replete mothers.

Gorging and plasma HDL-cholesterol - the Ramadan model

Article Abstract:

The effect of a single evening gorging meal on lipoproteins and plasma lipids in individuals observing the Ramadam was investigated. Twenty-two normal Muslim subjects and 16 non-fasting laboratory staff were recruited for the study. Results showed an increase in plasma high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations after four weeks. There was no significant change in very-low density lipoprotein cholesterol, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides and lipoprotein.
